Science

Intent:

At Swindon Academy, we believe science is vital to understanding the world. Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Offer structured and meaningful knowledge in biology, chemistry, and physics
  • Build a solid foundation in scientific skills such as planning, measuring, observing, recording, and evaluating
  • Deliver both content knowledge (substantive) and scientific methods (disciplinary) through clear subject areas, not general topics
  • Sequence learning carefully so that knowledge builds over time and revisits key scientific ‘big ideas’ to deepen understanding
  • Inspire curiosity, encourage questioning, and develop a love of science
  • Equip all pupils with the skills to think scientifically and understand the role of science in today’s world and their future

 Implementation:

Our science curriculum is adapted from United Learning and follows the National Curriculum (2014) and Early Years guidance. At Swindon Academy, science is taught weekly in Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring consistency and depth. Key features include:

  • Clearly sequenced units in each year group to support the step-by-step development of knowledge and skills
  • Focus on 'vertical concepts' informed by the Association for Science Education’s ‘Big Ideas in Science’
  • Teaching based on Rosenshine’s principles and best practice in cognitive science
  • Regular assessment to identify gaps and adapt teaching for all learners
  • Each unit includes:
  • Structured reviews to reinforce learning
  • Carefully sequenced lessons to build depth and understanding
  • Ongoing assessment to catch misconceptions early
  • Enrichment opportunities such as hands-on activities and educational visits

Impact:

We aim for all pupils to achieve strong outcomes in science and develop a lasting understanding of key scientific concepts. Our curriculum goes beyond minimum expectations to foster deeper knowledge. We monitor impact through:

  • Ongoing in-lesson assessments to check understanding and adjust teaching
  • Learning walks and development days to ensure consistency and high-quality delivery
  • Book looks and pupil voice to understand pupils’ progress, experiences, and engagement in science
