Maths at AC
Intent
At Swindon Academy, we are committed in helping every child develop a strong grasp and genuine enthusiasm for mathematics. We aim to nurture mathematical thinkers who use their knowledge to make sense of the world around them. We foucs on building secure foundations to support long-term success in maths.
Our goal is to empower children to:
- Develop confidence and fluency in mathematical fundamentals.
- Think logically and reason with clarity.
- Tackle problems with resilience and apply their skills in real-life contexts
Implementation
At Swindon Academy, Alton Close we have implemented a structured mastery approach to teaching mathematics supplemented using White Rose Maths resources.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we strive to build strong mathematical foundations for young learners by aligning learning with the Department for educations EYFS framework and the Early Learning Goals (ELG). Maths content focuses on early development of children’s understanding of numbers up to 20, the language of comparison and ordering and finding and creating patterns. The approach emphasizes hands-on, and practical ways of learning.
White Rose Maths implements a cumulative curriculum where a variety of mathematical topics are taught, built upon, and revisited throughout the year and throughout their time in school. This ensures that students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts over their primary school careers.
Mathematical topics are introduced and taught through the use of the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach, which helps students understand concepts more deeply and make connections between different representations of mathematics.
White Rose Maths places a strong emphasis on Problem-solving and reasoning skills. Students are encouraged to articulate their mathematical thinking, reason logically, and solve problems using a variety of strategies.
The curriculum aims to make learning engaging and relevant by showing students how mathematics applies to real-world contexts. This helps to foster a love for mathematics and develop confident, inquisitive learners.

Impact
We measure the impact of our curriculum using the following methods:
- Termly Progress in Understanding Mathematics Assessments (PUMA), a termly standardized maths tests which enable school to track progress, predict future performance and benchmark against national averages
- End of key stage SAT results
- Pupil discussions about their learning
Our problem-based approach to mathematics aims to equip children with the reasoning, pattern-spotting and problem-solving skills they need to thrive in the modern world.
