Year 10 Product Design

Overview

Term 

What are we learning 

 

1 

Core Technical Principles & Project 1 

Term 1 Theory: impact on design, workshop on standard components and shaping tools, impact on people, impact on enterprise, production techniques, scales of production, non-finite resources. 

Project 1: Zoomorphic Lamp; introduction to linkages and basic electronics. Students are expected to create a lamp that has been inspired by animal or mythical creature. Students are expected to research, sketch, model, test design ideas before manufacture.  

2 

Core Technical Principles, Mock Exam, End of Project 1, Starting Project 2 

Term 2 Theory: finite resources, physical and working properties, timber vs manufactured boards, stock forms, surface finishes, production systems, forces and stressors, types of motion, drawing theory/skills.  

Project 1: 4x lessons to complete  

Mock Exam: designed to test what they have learnt so far. 

Project 2: CAD/CAM Skills Box (see year 9 project); building on their wooden joint skills from year 9, students are expected

Core Technical Principles & Project 2 

Term 3 Theory: mechanical systems mini project (using cardboard to create a basic automata), papers and boards, working with paper and boards, metals and alloys, working with metals and alloys, polymers, working with polymers. 

Project 2: 9x lessons to complete  

Project 3: CAD Modelling

Core Technical Principles, Mock Exam, Project 3 & 4 

Term 4 Theory: modern materials, smart materials (+ workshop), jigs and moulds 

Project 3: 4x lessons to complete  

Mock Exam: designed to test what they have learnt so far. 

Project 4: Resin & Creating Moulds 

5 

Specialist Technical Principles, Project 5 

Term 5 Theory: textiles, working with textiles, composite materials, energy storage, input, processes and outputs, electronic systems. 

Project 5: Test Tube Holder/Table Centrepiece  

6 

NEA – Section A & B, Mock Exam 

NEA: Start of their coursework.
