Year 9 Geography

Overview

Term

What are we learning

1

Life in an emerging economy

In this module we look at life in a ‘newly emerging economy’. These are countries that have recently industrialised and are growing rapidly. Within this we look at the classification of different NEEs, including BRICS and MINTS. We then look closely at life in Nigeria and how it has changed as the country continues to develop. Finally, we address issues around pollution (water and air) within newly emerging countries.

2

Climate Change

Within the module we look at the evidence showing that climate change is continuing to become a dangerous issue for humanity. We look at the natural and human causes of climate change including the burning of fossil fuels and volcanic eruptions. We finish by looking at the different ways we aim to mitigate and adapt to the problems caused by climate change.

3

Energy

This module focusses on the key issues around the world with energy and energy security. This includes the distribution of fossil fuels and the dangers of countries importing huge amounts of energy from less stable countries. We finish by looking at the importance of renewable energies such as solar and how their role in the world will change as fossil fuel reserves continue to deplete.

4

Urban issues and Challenges: Rio

This module looks at the city of Rio de Janeiro in great detail including its physical geography, mountain and bays as well as the human geography around the inequalities in wealth and health between the wealthy districts and the poor communities in the Favelas.

5

Tectonic Hazards

This module looks at tectonic hazards in greater detail, including the movement of tectonic plates by convection currents and the physical processes that happen on plate margins. Finally, it looks at the handling of tectonic hazards (volcanoes and earthquakes) in countries of contrasting wealth.

6

Rivers

This module looks at Rivers in greater detail, including how their profiles change as you move through a rivers course. It looks at issues of flooding, the causes of flooding and the strategies put into place to manage flooding. It finishes by looking at Banbury and the impact of flooding within the UK.
