Vertical Tutoring

At Swindon Academy, each student is a member of one of four mixed-age Colleges.  Students in Years 7 - 10 are placed in tutor groups which are also mixed-age, which is called vertical tutoring.  These tutor groups are led by a College Leader with a team of tutors who work with parents and carers to monitor progress, provide personal support, encourage high achievement and challenge underachievement.  Year 11 are placed in College-based tutor groups made up of their own year group only, which has a bespoke tutor programme.

We believe that vertical tutoring promotes individual responsibility, enhances students’ confidence and encourages an environment of collaboration and teamwork.  The vertical tutoring system allows students to work together to develop tolerance, trust and empathy. Younger students are helped, guided and inspired by older students. Older students develop important leadership and social skills.
