Young Carers

A Young Carer is child or young person whose life is affected because they are responsible for looking after someone at home.

This can include a parent, grandparent, sibling or other family member. The people they look after may have a physical or learning disability, long term illness, mental health illness or suffer with substance misuse problems.

Caring Tasks

The responsibilities Young Carers have might include:

  • Personal care
  • Housework
  • Carrying shopping
  • Giving medication
  • Looking after siblings
  • Emotional care
  • Financial care

Swindon Academy has a designated members of staff who have special responsibility for Young Carers and will ensure that all support is offered and coordinated to suit each individual pupil.

At Swindon Academy, we are committed to supporting our Young Carers and their families. We have received the Young Carers Award which raises awareness and provides support to pupils who are Young Carers.
