History

  • Two-year A Level course
  • AQA 7042
  • 3 units
  • 56 UCAS points at top level

A Level History will allow you to understand the significance of historical events, the role of  individuals in history and the nature of change over time. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the past through political, social, economic and cultural perspectives.

History encourages learners to ask two very important questions: why and how.  This is key to sharpening critical thinking abilities, which combine analysis, research, essay writing and communication skills to help solve problems and form arguments for debate.

Besides further study of history at university, history is seen as a facilitating subject for study of other courses at Russell Group universities.  A Level historians follow a wide range of career paths including law, politics, public sector, business, marketing, journalism, economics, teaching, academia, insurance, social research, archaeology and curation (museums, galleries, archives and libraries).

In year 1, students study one breadth component on the Tudors and one depth component; Weimar Germany.  There is the opportunity to sit the AS examination at this point, which would be in the form of two exams.

In year 2, the breadth component continues to include around a 100-year period and depth studies focus on Nazi Germany. Examination is on the full periods for both breadth and depth studies.

In addition, students complete an historical investigation of a topic of choice worth 20% of the final A2 mark.  Utilising our links with Marlborough College, we make use of the History Library to enable students to pursue a topic of personal historical interest.

History can be studied in its own right or as part of various study pathways.  Please click the relevant links below to find out more:
