This course maps a study of literature across time through the lens of two foci: Aspects of Comedy and Elements of Social and Political Protest Writing. Through these, students explore the development of English Literature and how it has been used to entertain, subvert and rebel against societal expectations.

Alongside core texts such as Taming of the Shrew, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Kite Runner, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience and The Handmaid’s Tale, the course also comprises of a non-examination assessment (NEA). This facilitates wider reading and serves as an introduction to critical theories, extending students’ experiences and appreciation of literature whilst allowing freedom to explore their own interests.

Offering clear progression from GCSE Literature, this course allows students to build on the skills and knowledge already gained and prepare them for their next steps.

At A Level, students study modules on Aspects of Comedy and Elements of Social and Political Protest Writing. These will be divided between two exam papers, each worth 40% of the overall mark. In addition, the NEA coursework will comprise of two essays of 1250-1500 words, each responding to a different aspect of the critical anthology. This is worth 20% of the overall A Level mark.

Acceptance onto this course requires a grade 5+ in English Literature and English Language GCSEs.

English Literature can be studied in its own right or as part of the Teaching and Education Pathway.
