English Language

  • Two-year A Level course
  • AQA 7702
  • 7 units
  • 56 UCAS points at top level

This two-year course is an exciting and intellectually stimulating departure from anything that students will have studied at GCSE.

Through this linguistics-centred study, students will have the opportunity to explore how language is used to create meaning in the real world: how identity is shaped and performed through the use of language; how language varies between genders, ages, sexualities and occupations; how language is used to represent social groups and events; how language has changed over time and how children acquire language in the first instance.

The non-examination assessment (coursework) module enables students to practise creative writing, as well as gain an understanding of the process of dissertation writing through an investigation of their own choice of language use. Students who study English Language have numerous career possibilities such as journalism, professional writing, copywriting, further academic study, law and education.

In year 1, students study modules in textual variations and representations, language diversity and writing skills.

In year 2, students study modules in textual variations and representations, children's language development, language diversity and change, language discourses, writing skills, language investigation and original writing.

Acceptance onto this course requires a grade 5+ in English Literature and English Language GCSEs.
