Applied Science

  • Two-year Cambridge Technical course
  • OCR 601/7436/5
  • 5 units
  • 56 UCAS points at top level

The qualification is designed to cover the key knowledge and practical skills required for employment in the science industry and can provide a springboard onto higher education courses. Studying this qualification will help students to access degree courses and apprenticeships or pursue careers in the health, education and science sectors.

In year 1, students study two core units. The first unit covers science fundamentals, including key concepts of biology, chemistry and physics and is assessed externally by an exam. The second unit covers laboratory techniques and introduces learners to quantitative laboratory techniques covering the generic skills required by technicians working in any kind of scientific laboratory. This unit is assessed externally by an exam.

In year 2, students build upon the knowledge and understanding on laboratory techniques gained from unit 2 during the controls of hazards in the laboratory unit. These skills are internally assessed, alongside two further units, microbiology and product testing techniques. Apart from applied science sector-specific content, the requirements of the qualification enable students to develop transferable and higher order skills that are highly regarded by both HE and employers. For example, carrying out practical laboratory tasks, identifying and controlling hazards, collecting, analysing and presenting data, reviewing and refining methodology of practical and laboratory-based work. Learners also develop other transferable skills such as teamwork, problem solving, research and organisational skills.
