Top Playwright Visits Academy

On the 12th June, students were introduced to a real mover and shaker in the drama world. Mark Wheeller, author of the verbatim plays ‘Too Much Punch for Judy’ and ‘Graham’ visited Swindon Academy to deliver three workshops on creating and developing performances.

They covered topics from process theatre and mantle of the expert, where students were thrown into the world of young people in a borstal and physical theatre, interpreting the car crash scene in a play covering the topic of drinking and driving.  A year 7 English class got the chance to edit some of Mark's testimonials to create their own monologues.

After school, Mark inspired a group to write and create their own scenes for performance by giving them an insight into what it takes to be a playwright and how to get started.

Our students worked on their pieces and level 3 Performing Arts students from New College performed their scripts on Thursday 17th July.  Our students were blown away by how well their scripts were brought to life on the stage.
