PICKPOCKETS, gruel and the Artful Dodger took centre stage at this year’s glittering annual show, Oliver!
Oliver! a musical, tells the tale of 9-year-old orphan Oliver Twist (Sam Holloway) who falls in with a group of street-urchin pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger (Ellis Croke) and masterminded by the criminal Fagin (Mr McNally). When Oliver's intended mark, Mr. Brownlow (Connor Newdick) takes pity on the lad and offers him a home, Fagin's henchman Bill Sykes (Mr Martin) plots to kidnap the boy to keep him from talking.
Auditions started in September when primary, secondary and sixth form students, as well as staff, were given lead roles on the stage as well as off. Assistant Director (Millie McKenzie) and Stage Managers (Katy Holmes & Owen Vincent) ensured the production ran smoothly behind the scenes. The total company of 120 students from years 4 to 13 rehearsed regularly, including some weekends, to make the show a roaring success. It really was total academy involvement with members of the site premises team producing mobile scenery and playing in the band.
The show, featured slick performances of classic ditties ‘Food, Glorious Food’ and ‘Consider Yourself’. Huge favourites with the Primary Choir and the audience.
Leigh Matthews, Curriculum Leader for performing arts said “I couldn’t be more proud of everyone’s efforts in making this year’s show such a huge success”.
Ms Matthews added, ‘We wanted to do something completely different from last year’s hi-tech spectacular which would involve all the children and the community too. I feel immensely proud of all of them for what they have achieved”.
