Swindon Academy has been taking part in ‘The IDeas Festival’ a United Learning Programme that was launched in 2016 with the Spirit of Rio Cultural Festival. The Cultural Festival Programme, which runs between June and July 2017 across United Learning schools, celebrates and shares ideas on how schools can use their local, regional and national identity (‘ID’) to enrich the curriculum, both inside and outside the classroom.
Swindon Academy’s project delivered a highly engaging programme of dance and music to year 6 pupils from Beech Avenue and Alton Close sites. Pupils, staff and the local community were brought together through Dance Workshops that encompassed Caribbean, Ballet and Salsa along with Steel Pan and Samba Drumming Workshops. At Swindon Academy all of the workshop leaders came from local community groups, building stronger ties between the school and the local community while exposing students to an enriched curriculum of different cultures that are on their doorstep. This Cultural Music Festival has enabled the Secondary Performing Arts Team to reach out to year 6 pupils in our all-through academy and give them, not only a taster of what is on offer in the Secondary Phase, but also to build their confidence and enthusiasm for the transition into secondary school in September.
