Ofsted Reports and DfE League Tables

In May 2017, Swindon Academy was inspected by Ofsted.  Following this inspection, we are delighted that Ofsted has rated Swindon Academy as GOOD in all categories.  In order to make this judgement, Inspectors visited a random selection of lessons, sampled pupils’ work, examined evidence relating to safeguarding, assessment and school evaluation, examined parent and staff responses to the Ofsted questionnaire and met with a wide range of pupils, leaders, governing body members and trustees.

A full copy of the inspection report is available here, however we have summarised many aspects of the report below.

The team of Inspectors recognised the significant raising of standards that have taken place at the academy over time, and that progress in many areas is above national levels.  The Inspectors spent considerable time in lessons and recognised that “teachers have high expectations” and that “pupils make good progress”. The report noted that “teaching, learning and assessment are good” and that “disadvantaged pupils are provided for well and profit from the good teaching throughout the school” and that “there is no difference between their achievement and other pupils in the school and nationally.”  Inspectors acknowledged that “literacy support …. underpins the higher rates of achievement within the secondary phase and rapid improvements in the primary phase.”

Inspectors also noted how pupils were well behaved, engaged in their lessons and had aspirations for their own learning, saying that “pupils respect the discipline promoted and enjoy the improved climate for learning”, and confirmed that “pupils are well-behaved and ready to learn” and “responsive to teaching and willing to participate in lessons.”

The inspection team acknowledged the strengths of the pastoral care at the academy, recognising that “the physical and emotional welfare of pupils is at the heart of the school’s work” and that pupils “feel safe, and are safe, within the school environment”.
