Ecoschools

Students have been working very hard to achieve Science Award for the International Award Program Eco-Schools.  Alton Close site has already achieved the bronze award.

Eco-Schools is one of five environmental education programs run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education.  Eco-Schools is an international award program that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. Their aim is to encourage children to become more aware of their impact on the environment and ensure sustainability for the future.

Eco-Warrior groups have been set up which involves children from year 2 to year 11.  At Alton Close pupils have set their own targets on how to improve the school site and make it friendlier towards the environment.  They have decided that they would like to reduce the amount of paper thrown out, try to compost school waste, pick up litter and turn off lights around the school site.  Pupils have been actively involved and spend every Thursday lunch time recycling the paper waste from each classroom and collecting the fruit waste for composting.

The Eco-Schools project has had a positive impact on the whole school.  Children in year 1 have been seen telling teachers off for putting the paper in the wrong bin!  Pupils are really upbeat about what they need to do in order to save the environment in which they live and we hope that you can support them in their decisions.  The main area for development is the school site.  Pupils would like to make it a more inviting area to learn outside.  This is why we are appealing for help and support from local business to enhance the learning environment for the school.
