How Our Specialisms Work Together

At Swindon Academy our specialism is Science supported by Business and Enterprise. This means we are able to develop skills in scientific enquiry throughout the Academy.  From as early as the Foundation Phase we encourage our young students to investigate in a practical and active way and ask the question ‘why?’  To see a copy of our Specialism Magazine please click here.

Over the last 2 years since gaining this specialism, we have created an observable “scientific” ethos.

Students now have the opportunity to:
  • Become specialism captains – providing the opportunity for students to help lead projects and feedback what students want from Science and Business and Enterprise at all ages.
  • Become involved in our campaign to become an eco-school.
  • Join Science, Engineering and Enterprise clubs to inspire them.
  • Participate in Science and Enterprise days and Science and Enterprise weeks - providing them with the opportunity to experience a different, exciting way of learning.
  • Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the ULT Enterprise Challenge in November each year.  It is the intention to allow every student to experience at least one enterprise activity each year.
  • Enterprise skills and activities are embedded within the curriculum so that students can progress and learn new skills which can be applied to all subject areas.
  • Students have participated in Prepare for Work days with Honda; Make your Mark with a Tenner Challenge; Make your Mark Challenge, which is a national event; Olympic Challenge; Be the best you can be; to name just a few.
  • Participate in Science Festivals.
  • Help teach Science to their parents!
Science results have improved over the last two years – in 2008, 50% of students achieved at least one A*-C at GCSE.  We are predicted to exceed this % this year.  Once Specialism skills are embedded within the curriculum, we anticipate an improvement in attainment across all areas of the curriculum.

Gaining experience in Science and Business and Enterprise will help our student develop key skills for life such as leadership, communication, problem solving and self confidence.
