Science Across the Curriculum

Science, Business and Enterprise and Engineering Work Together

The main focus of Cross-Curricular Projects across the school is to make students and staff aware of the endless possibilities that we can create together with the resources available to us.

Having two specialist subjects, Science with Business and Enterprise we have many opportunities to incorporate these subjects in other curriculum areas.

The cross-curricular projects set off with the build of a hovercraft.  Students from year groups 8-10 were involved in the planning, designing and testing of the hovercraft.

All the STEM subjects, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, were incorporated in this task.

Students were given the opportunity to develop their crafting skills, apply their knowledge of shapes, constructing a design that will work and demonstrating the concept of air particles and pressure.

Each year group focused on a specific task in the making of the hovercraft and was tested by all. Not only was the project a success, but it reinforced the importance of teamwork to all involved.  The completion of the project also showed the students’ determination to learn.

Science and History

Currently in history, year 7 students are studying Medieval England.  Home classes are collapsed so that they can be more creative.

In Medieval England there were no doctors as Science had not developed sufficiently by then.  However, students learned how people made medicines using herbs and food stuffs.  A pestle and mortar was borrowed from the Science department and chopping boards from cookery.  Year 7 then became doctors for the afternoon trying to solve the ailments of individual medieval characters!!!

The results of this cross-curricular project have been amazing.  The session led to some excellent independent thinking on the part of the students as they combined their knowledge of the two subjects.

These lessons have been great for teaching and learning and the students have been having real fun!  It has been fantastic to see students having fun while not realising that they are learning!!
