Make your Mark Challenge
The annual Make your Mark Challenge launches the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week in November each year. There is a different theme each year.
The challenge brief is not disclosed until just after midnight on Sunday, so that everyone has a fair chance in the challenge. The challenge in 2009 saw students from years 8 – 10 working in small teams to meet the challenge. The challenge brief was ‘don’t be a carbon copy’.
Students had to come up with an idea that would make a social impact and help the environment or their local community. Students created ideas such as a Go Kart track; cultural activities to link different parts of the local community; children’s play areas and a Food Bus. The Food Bus was created by year 10 students as they thought that this idea would benefit the local community by encouraging young people to learn to cook. They hoped that this would encourage families to spend quality time together cooking and help parents learn about healthy options.
The winning team was The Food Bus and included Lorraine Davis; Kyle Saunders; Prashanna Gurung and Alicia Collard.
The students have to complete the challenge in a day and at the end of the day they are expected to present their ideas to a panel of judges so that a winner can be found.
Students develop various skills throughout the day such as teamwork; presentation skills; financial awareness by developing a budget; independent enquiry and creative thinking.
