In the primary phase, we have invested in the Cornerstones Curriculum, based on a clear educational philosophy that enhances children's learning and empowers teachers. The Curriculum is a project-based model that allows our academy to tailor our own curriculum specifically for our school, our pupils and our community. It is proven to raise attainment and capture the imagination of pupils and teachers alike. We think children learn better when they are given the chance to use their imagination and apply what they learn. Our curriculum does just that, but it also helps us to meet targets set out in the 2014 National Curriculum.
For mathematics, we use Abacus Evolve, which has a blocked structure. It fits well with the key principles of the National Framework and is flexible, creative, has cross-curricular links and a sound progression. In year 1, we have adopted ‘Maths Mastery’, which has been developed on the best of existing practice from all over the world to create the Mathematics Mastery approach. This approach leads to a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Phonics is taught through letters and sounds and spelling through ‘Get Spelling’.
As an academy, we are constantly working to improve the quality of teaching and learning to ensure that our students achieve the very best results possible. As part of this process, in September 2014 we will be introducing a Mastery Curriculum for year 7. This will help to ensure that our students are fully prepared for the changes to the examination processes that are taking place at key stage 4. Alongside this, we know that our students thrive when we take a consistent approach across the academy as they feel more confident and secure in lessons. From September, we are going to strengthen the techniques that we use as teachers in the classroom. Students will notice their teachers using common terms across their classes. For example, SLANT, which means Sit Up, Listen, Ask and Answer Questions, Nod and Track.
